We live in a society that promotes impractical work ethic modernized as “grind culture”, where capitalism should precede all. We are taught from a young age that there is nothing more meaningful than having an excess of financial assets. We venerate the Elon Musks’ and Jeff Bezos’ of the world, because society tells us this is the path we should aim to reach. I cannot sit here and lie and say that I did not fall victim to this way of thinking. Growing up in a capitalistic society, it is easy to focus on the things you do not possess. Or even perhaps how much better your life would be, if you did not have to worry about your finances. I have since learned that having an excess in wealth, or anything materialistic, should not be anyone’s goal. My goal is to focus on my purpose in life and the only way to truly achieve that is through discerning what I have been called to do.
I am a firm believer in divine purpose. In other words, I believe that God places every single being on this earth to find and fulfill their specific purpose in life. For some, this purpose is more easily defined than others. For example, I’m sure Beyoncé and LeBron James were fully aware of their purpose at a very early age. But I’m more interested in the journeys of those who were not aware of their calling until their thirties, forties, or even fifties. Because those journeys take time, patience, and a willingness to explore. And I find that journey to be powerful, because it gives you the opportunity to learn and love so much about yourself. There’s a saying that goes something along the lines of, “The beauty of the journey is not found in the destination, but in the scenery along the way”. And I believe that to be nothing further from the truth.
So here I am, on this journey of my discernment attempting to understand the next steps in the process. I began by identifying things that I enjoy doing and devoting time to those things. I’ve learned the hard way that you will not get anywhere by not trying. You will also not get very far by attempting to take on too much, too soon. It’s about balance. So the first step for me, was creating a blog. Ultimately, I have a dream of becoming a novelist. Whether or not I’m a good writer is debatable(🙃), but in order to make that dream a reality I have to build my repertoire. In order to reach the top of the stairs, I have to climb up each step one at a time. This blog is just a small step in the ideation process. It allows for creative writing, to explore the possibilities.
Often I find myself envisioning a life where I am doing exactly what I love. I imagine what my “perfect” life would look like. I see myself waking up every morning, and I look out of the window to see snowy, majestic mountains. I make hot coffee and as I sit it on the counter, I admire the view outside. The fireplace brings joy and warmth while I express gratitude for the life that I live. I walk towards my kitchen office and sit down in front of my laptop. And I just write. I write my novel. I write short stories. I write poetry. I write everything. Because this brings me joy. And I think identifying your dream life and passions, can help bring it into fruition. That is the art in it all. You get to sculpt and transform your thoughts and ideals into any picture you would like to paint. Your art is what makes you unique. Your art is what motivates you to keep pushing to get to the destination. And finally, your art is yours and can not be replicated. Find your art and begin painting your picture. It will be beautiful no matter what..
